LivingRail will develop scenarios on the state of living style, cultures, mobility and economic activities in Europe by 2050 and explore a vision on the future role of the environmentally friendly, electrified railways within them. Scenarios will investigate possible evolutions leading to a reduction of the environmental harm of transport that in the same time increase or at least maintain citizen’s quality of life.

Based on today’s best practice, the analytical work of LivingRail will investigate how the railways and related transport modes can develop technically and in organisational and operational terms to achieve the 2050 targets and how spatial and urban planning, transport policy and other areas can contribute to achieve the 2050 targets.

This website aims at identifying options for establishing sustainable and rail-friendly regions, cities and business communities in various areas of Europe. The work is mainly focussed on best practices of ‘transit oriented development’ of regions, cities and commercial areas in European, national and regional transport and spatial planning, urban development and industrial policy, including integrated urban development plans incorporating railway and public transport projects. This is the basis for later analysis of suitable policy frameworks towards 2050 and identification of potential barriers.

Examples of Best Practice are aimed at describing today’s situation in various European regions and to point possible pathways to achieve the 2050 goals, including related costs and eventual risks.
